Poker Movies
Gambling often shows up in movies from Hollywood like Honeymoon in Vegas or House of Games but the first poker movie must have been A Cure for Pokeritis, released in 1912.
There have been many movies made that show card playing scenes, for instance, Kenny Roger’s Gambler and even sitcoms like Grace Under Fire. James Caan played cards in the move The Gambler, The Hustler, and The Color of Money with others dealt with other forms of gambling but still entertaining. The Sting, from 1973 was a great movie where Paul Newman hustles Robert Shaw in a poker game that took place on a train. An oldie from 1950 called Born Yesterday is where gin is the game. This featured Judy Holliday and Broderick Crawford and was remade in 1993 with Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith and not as well done.
From 1936 was the Three Godfathers. John Wayne was featured in the best version of this movie in 1948. In the 1936 version it is Walter Brennan who help a stranger to cheat at a poker game.
